Marie Bonds, née Wilkans (also known as "Sweet Cheeks" Marie) is a former prostitute and the wife of Lytton Police Department officer Sonny Bonds. Marie was instrumental in the undercover operation to arrest Jessie Bains, and later became a target of Bains' campaign of revenge. He kidnapped Marie as bait to lure Sonny to Steelton and murder them both. Sonny and Marie married shortly afterwards. A pregnant Marie was then stabbed by Jessie's brother Michael Bains, a member of a dangerous cult, and fell into a coma. She recovered, and later gave birth to Sonny's child.

Years later, Marie happened to be present at two different terrorist attacks: one by Sovereign America at her place of work, and another by the People's Liberation Party at a TV studio. She survived both events.

Background[]

Marie Wilkans and Sonny Bonds attended high school in Lytton together, and considered each other "old chums". Certain subtle comments from other characters familiar with the two seem to suggest that they were mildly romantically involved for a while. After school, Wilkans attended stewardess school, but failed to graduate. Instead, she took up a job as a prostitute. The two did not meet until many years later.

As a prostitute, Marie received the street nickname "Sweet Cheeks".

The Death Angel Affair[]

Marie and Sonny were reunited during the time of the Jessie Bains investigation. Bonds, still a uniformed patrol officer at the time, was responding to a complaint filed by Carol Grounds of Carol's Caffeine Castle, regarding some bikers at Wino Willy's Cocktail Lounge who were blocking her parking spaces. Sonny found four bikers at the lounge, and attempted to evict them. The situation nearly deteriorated to violence, but the bikers were convinced to clear out. At that point, Marie, who had been sitting at the bar waiting for a client, recognized Sonny and thanked him for getting rid of the bikers, whom she said "had strange ideas".

After some re-acquaintance, Sonny tapped Marie for information on criminal activities in the city. Marie revealed an encounter with a client named "Hoffman" or "Coffman" (later revealed to be Jason Taselli under an alias), who had apparently told her about a cocaine kingpin named "The Death Angel" trying to take over Lytton. In return for the information, Sonny warned Marie about Operation Trick Trap - a city-wide dragnet for prostitutes - that was about to take place. During the conversation, Marie expressed an attraction to Sonny, and her desire to meet him again some other time. Lytton Police Station's custodian R. J. Jefferson later commented to Sonny that he'd heard Marie was calling him "a USDA prime cut in blue".

Some time later, Marie was arrested as part of Operation Trick Trap despite Sonny's warning (later claiming that she'd thought it was already over). At the time, the head of the Lytton Police Department's Narcotics Division, Detective Lieutenant James Morgan, was planning an undercover operation at the Hotel Delphoria to infiltrate Jessie Bains' criminal organization and take him down. Hearing of Marie's arrest, Morgan sent newly-recruited Narcotics detective Sonny Bonds to offer her a release from prison. In exchange, Marie would help give credence to Sonny's undercover persona, "Jimmy Lee Banksten". Marie agreed to this arrangement.

Prior to the start of the operation, Wilkans was taken to the Hotel Delphoria, where she hung around in the Hotel Delphoria Cocktail Lounge with her old acquaintance, bartender Woodrow Roberts. During this time, she observed several shady characters going in and out of the lounge's storage room. When Sonny entered in his undercover get-up as Jimmy Lee Banksten and gave the agreed signal, Marie pretended to be old friends with "Banksten" in front Roberts, claiming that "Banksten" had just been released from prison. She also alerted Sonny about the storage area. This gave Sonny the opportunity to suggest to Roberts that he was looking for a "good time", eventually allowing him to bribe Roberts to gain access to the back-room poker games taking place at the hotel. At this point, Sonny took Marie up to his hotel room, called her a cab, and sent her back to the Lytton Police Station, ending her part in the operation.

During the ticker-tape parade in Sonny Bonds' honor after the successful conviction of Jessie Bains, Marie was a guest of honor seen hugging and kissing Bonds right in front of Mayor Fuddrucker, chief Randolph Whipplestick, and the entire crowd. This was presumably the official start of a romantic relationship between Sonny and Marie.

Jessie Bains' Revenge[]

PQ2 Event SonnyMarieDate

Marie Wilkans and Sonny Bonds continued dating for some time, but continued living separately. Marie left her prostitution career, and attributed the change in her life to Sonny's influence. She talked Sonny into trading his sports car for a "sensible" compact model.

A year after Jessie Bains' arrest, the criminal managed to escape Lytton City Jail, whereupon he embarked on a campaign to murder each of the people responsible for his incarceration. That evening, Sonny and Marie had a date at Arnie's Restaurant, in which they discussed the potential danger, and Sonny warned Marie that Bains might target her as well. During the date, while kissing Marie, Bonds learned that her new favorite lipstick was called Pink Rapture. The date ended with Marie and Sonny driving to her house for a passionate night together.

The next day, despite Sonny's warnings, Bains did manage to break into Marie's home and kidnap her. He took her to his motel room at the Snuggler's Inn, where a tube of lipstick she was carrying rolled under the bed (or possibly placed there deliberately, by either Marie or Bains). After setting up a lethal booby-trap for Bonds, Bains took Marie to his car and drove her all the way to Steelton, where he locked her up in a control room in the city's sewers. Bains proceeded to murder Steelton local Donald Colby, a witness against him at his trial, who had been living in Steelton under witness protection.

Meanwhile, Bonds followed clues left behind by Bains and discovered his motel room. He and partner Keith Robinson raided the room, narrowly avoiding the trap set by bains. Bonds then discovered Donald Colby's card (probably left intentionally by Bains) as well as the tube of lipstick. The two detectives hurried to Marie's house, correctly deducing that she was in danger. Bains had left a note on the door for Bonds, pretending to be Marie; but a quick comparison of the handwriting revealed that it was not from her. This drove Bonds to use a spare key hidden above the door to enter the house and discover the obvious signs of struggle.

In an ashtray on the floor of Marie's hallway, Bonds found a partially burned list left behind by Bains, containing the names of four of the witnesses who testified against him: Marie Wilkans, Woody Roberts, Donald Colby and Sonny Bonds himself. Woody Roberts, whose body had been found earlier that day, was marked with a tick.

Deducing that Colby would be the next target, Bonds and Robinson boarded a flight to Steelton, where they tracked Bains to Burt Park with the help of the Steelton Police Department. Bonds soon found his way into the sewer and discovered Marie tied to a chair in the control room. Before Sonny could free Marie, Bains returned, and a shootout erupted in which Bains was shot and killed.

Following a mandatory Internal Affairs investigation into the shooting, Bonds was cleared of all wrongdoings and awarded a two-week paid vacation. He was also awarded a medal at a small ceremony held at Lytton Airport, where he and Marie boarded a plane to an island paradise. During the flight, Bonds proposed marriage to Marie, and she accepted. The two were married some time afterwards.

Cult Stabbing[]

Some time after Marie and Sonny's marriage, Marie was stabbed by two members of a dangerous cult, Michael Bains and Steve Rocklin. She survived, but was in deep coma. Sonny investigated the crime, discovering that one of the assailants was none other than the brother of Jessie Bains, giving the stabbing a revenge motive; though this later turned out to be tangential to the true motives. Sonny eventually located and retrieved Marie's locket, taken durign the stabbing, and returned it to the unconscious Marie, at which time she regained consciousness. After the cult was brought down, Marie told Sonny that she was pregnant with his baby.

Terrorist Attacks[]

Marie Bonds later took up a job working for California Security Bank, while her husband worked for the Los Angeles Harbour division.[1] She was able to report a robbery at the bank using her cell phone and hiding in a closet. She reported that the gunmen had announced they were members of a domestic terrorist group, Sovereign America, and told the police there were three employees and a few customers trapped inside.

Later, Marie Bonds was in the studio audience of the "Donna!" show when she once again found herself hostage, as terrorists from the People's Liberation Party took over the studio.

Personality and traits[]

According to the earliest available police record, Marie's birthday is 2/14/1953 - St. Valentine's Day.

Marie is sometimes described as "outgoing and bubbly", and having a "shapely figure". Bartender Woodrow Roberts described her as "a cute little number".

As Sonny was taking Marie out of the Hotel Delphoria Cocktail Lounge, Roberts also warned Sweet Cheeks not to use "jello in the bathtub" again, indicating that she had done something similar with a client in the past.

She referred to Sonny Bonds by the nicknames "Precious", "Sweet Thing", "Sweet Pea" and "Darlin'", indicating a possible southern accent and/or origin. This, however, disappeared as time went on.

Marie's House[]

PQ2 Location MariesHouse Exterior

During her dating period with Sonny Bonds, Marie lived in a small, 1-bedroom house on 222 West Peach Street. The neighborhood, in west Lytton, was designed by architect Oscar Cano, and its construction was completed three days before Super Bowl XII (1978). Her specific house is known as the "Princessette".

Marie's house is covered in light yellow stucco, and has a lawn and bush row outside, which Marie keeps well-tended. At the time, a tree that had been planted on the curb was still growing, propped up by a long stake. The house has only one story, with a brown roof and two street-facing windows left of the door. The garage is painted a light blue. A brown fence separates the front lawn from the back yard. Marie kept a spare key above the door.

PQ2 Location MariesHouse Interior

Inside, the door opens directly into a living room on the left, and a passageway to the garage on the right. Behind the living room is a kitchen, next to which is a door to the bathroom. A short hallway next to the bathroom door leads right into the bedroom. According to boyfriend Sonny, Marie kept the house immaculately clean and orderly, and her kitchen well-stocked. She had at least one ashtray out, despite not being a smoker.

During Marie's abduction by Jessie Bains, the house showed visible signs of struggle. Marie's phone had been torn from the wall - apparently during an attempt to call for help - and an imported Mexican lamp on the hallway table had been shattered. Bains partially burned a small note listing his intended victims in an ashtray, later recovered by Bonds and used as justification to fly to Steelton in an attempt to prevent Bains from killing one of the targets - Donald Colby.
