Steve Jones

Steve Jones is an officer in the Lytton Police Department. After years of work for the Traffic division, Jones was promoted to detective and assigned to the Narcotics division, where he was serving during the time of Jessie Bains' escape from Lytton City Jail, but played no part in those events.

Jones is an avid poet, writing comedic poems for his colleagues. Some sources credibly link Steve Jones with Steve Johnson, who was Sonny Bonds' friend in the Traffic Department in the preceding years.

Career[]

Officer Steve Jones joined the Lytton Police Department in 1977, initially serving in uniform at the Traffic Division. During this time, Jones earned a commendation for stopping a fleeing stolen vehicle that was endangering other drivers.

At some point after 1980, Jones was promoted to detective and attached to the Narcotics Division.

Poetry[]

Jones enjoys writing poetry, and gladly shares his poems with colleagues. The poems cover various different topics, including Jones' own work at the LPD, his financial situation, and so forth.

Four of Jones' poems were shared with Sonny Bonds in the days surrounding Jessie Bains' escape from Lytton City Jail.

"A grievance form... you want to begin it

Because you've been hassled by the Lieutenant.

It makes its way through the required channels,

And is finally heard by the review board panel.

The envelope you open.. you read.. you quiver!

"I search for the pusher with drugs for sale.

I hook him and book him and take him to jail.

The court hears the case and I'm sad to say

he's back on the streets the very next day."

"My father done told me a long time ago,

'Son, save your money and climb out of the hole.'

He gave me a dime, and with a big smile

I put it on my dresser to save for awhile.

Inflation taught me with the years I spent,

The dime I saved was only worth five cents."

Get out of my way while I'm mopping the hall.'

She mopped and she slopped 'til the cows came home,

Now she's mopping and slopping at home all alone."

Behind the scenes[]

Based on the minimal information provided in Police Quest II, it is possible that Steve Jones is the same character as "Steve Johnson" who appeared in the original game; He was only named "Johnson" once in that game, otherwise being referred to as "Steve" throughout.

The Police Quest 1 novel found in the Police Quest Casebook - as well as the hint book section of the Casebook - both use the name Steve Jones in place of Steve Johnson, indicating that the two characters are indeed one and the same.
